Lattice Pattern

Lattice pattern from Hoe Work, published 1891 Lattice pattern from Hoe Work, published 1891
This makes a handsome afghan for a child, made of two colours, with narrow ribbon run in the open part (from top to bottom). Try working the plain rows in one colour and the crossed rows in the second colour. Sample was made with dk wool on 4mm needles.

Pattern

For the stripe cast on 26sts (or a multiple of 6sts + 2) and K 3 rows.
4th row: Sl 1, *k1 winding the yarn around the needle 4 times, repeat from * to last st, K1 winding the yarn around the needle 3 times
5th row: Sl 1 dropping the extra wraps off the needle to make one elongated stitch, * slip the next 6sts to the right hand needle, dropping off the extra loops as you do so. Put your left hand needle into the first 3sts that you slipped and pull them over the last 3sts, thus returning them to the left hand needle. Return the other 3sts to the left hand needle and K all 6 of the stitches you have just crossed through each other. Repeat from * to last st, K1 winding the yarn around the needle 3 times and dropping the extra loops off the needle.
Rows 6 and 7: Knit
Rows 4-7 form pattern. Repeat for desired length.

Gingham

This is a fun pattern stitch, reminiscent of old gingham cloth. You must keep the yarn very loose across the 5 slipped sts or the knitting will pucker. If you are using a small number of sts you can knit back and forth on double points; a larger number of sts will required working back and forth on circulars. Please note the directions at the end of the row to turn or slip sts to other end of needle.

Note: the chart depicts stitches in right side rows from right to left (that is, your first stitch in right side row will be the first stitch on the right of the chart) and stitches in wrong side row from left to right (that is, your first stitch in wrong side row will be the first stitch on the left of the chart). To make this concept easier the number of each row is shown at the beginning of row (number 1 is on the right side of the chart and number 2 is on the left side). Ignore this note if you knit in the round and start all your rows from the right of the chart.
